Microsuction
Microsuction is a procedure used to unblock your ears of cerumen (wax), infective debris and foreign bodies in the outer ear canal. I use a high powered microscope and a dental chair to position you to look directly into your ears. I will then use suction, curettes or forceps to remove the wax depending on the type of wax and patient cooperation.
Removal of material blocking the ear canal such as wax, infected material, dead skin layers and foreign bodies can assist in instilling medication into the ear and clearing the ear prior to hearing assessment tests.
All equipment used is either single use for each patient or cleaned and sterilised in accordance with AS/NZS 4815:2006 Office-based health care facilities - Reprocessing of reusable medical and surgical instruments and equipment, and maintenance of the associated environment.
Ear Health assessment
A detailed patient history, discussion of symptoms and ear examination is performed for every patient to ensure correct treatment of patient concern is carried out.
Management plan
I will work with every patient to devise a management plan to ensure continuation of optimum ear health.
Ongoing management might include:
-Regular use of wax softening agents if needed.
-Regular check up every 6-12 months.
-Ear care education and advice.
-Referral to GP or ENT specialist if indicated.
